Information on how to cope with Seasonal Affective Disorder

Published on 6th September 2016

SADA is an information source for the public and for health professionals dedicated to advising and supporting SAD sufferers nationwide. Their site has lots of advice on where and how to get help for Seasonal Affective Disorder. You may find the following blog from their website helpful for ideas.

"People who have had SAD for a long time and SADA members will no doubt forgive us for starting September with a reminder. Even after many years we still need to remember the routine and get ourselves started in good time. Long experience has taught us that it is easier to cope at an early stage with a slightly lowered mood than to ignore it and have to dig ourselves out of a deeper pit at a later stage.

If you're new to the idea of SAD and think you might have it, read our website thoroughly. Informing yourself about the condition is the first step to understanding and realising that you are not alone. The more you know about it, the better equipped you will be and the less it can surprise you.

  • Go to your GP and for backup, ask us for our helpsheet "Recognising your SAD Patients"
  • Follow our guidelines and invest in a lightbox as a first treatment option
  • Your GP may prescribe medication if you need it, so give it a chance
  • Join SADA and access all our information, helpsheets, newsletters and ongoing support
  • Consider talking therapies as well if you have other issues complicating your SAD
  • Make time to walk outdoors on a daily basis
  • Learn about your body clock and keep an eye on it
  • Try to eat healthy food and have regular meal times
  • Adjust your expectations of yourself as winter approaches
  • Make sure you plan some treats and things you enjoy
  • Try to stay positive"

"I have had numerous massages elsewhere but can honestly say that the one I had at body and mind was by far the best. The experience was amazing from beginning to end. Cannot recommend enough."
