This October sees the annual Backcare Awareness Week, organised by the national charity Backcare to highlight an all too common complaint. This year’s theme is ‘Beyond the Box’ and focuses on safe ways to lift everyday objects whilst ensuring that you are protecting your back in the process.
Back problems affect an estimated 80% of the adult population at some stage. That means 4 out of 5 of us may be impaired by painful symptoms affecting our everyday life and the things we enjoy. In many cases it’s difficult to identify a single cause but factors such as poor posture, obesity, repetitive physical work and stress all have a part to play. Symptoms can range from a minor 24 hour pain to more acute and chronic conditions requiring medical attention. Back pain related problems are said to cost the NHS over £1 billion a year and employers over £600 million.
Your back is a complex and sophisticated instrument and any pain could be located in the muscles, the discs, the spine, or a combination of these. The good news is, if you find yourself affected by back pain then there is plenty of help available to alleviate or manage your condition.
Here at the Body & Mind Centre we offer a range of treatments to benefit back problems, from sports and remedial massage, to physiotherapy for more chronic conditions. Our experienced therapists have treated many back problems and helped a great number of people on the way back to health and fitness.
If you are managing a back problem then it’s also important to take time to relax. This not only helps your muscles to loosen but also lifts your spirits and takes your mind off your condition. An aromatherapy massage or reflexology treatment are just a couple of the soothing therapies we offer.
So this October let Body and Mind help you ‘back’ to fitness!
