Life can feel overwhelming sometimes.
You might be dealing with anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship difficulties, grief or simply feeling as though you’ve lost your way. Sometimes there isn’t one obvious reason, you just know that things don’t quite feel right.
At Body & Mind Therapy Centre, we believe looking after your mental wellbeing is every bit as important as looking after your physical health.
Counselling gives you a confidential, supportive space to talk openly about what you’re experiencing, without judgement and without feeling that you have to protect or reassure the person listening.
What is counselling?
Counselling is a talking therapy that gives you the opportunity to explore your thoughts, emotions and experiences with a trained professional.
Unlike conversations with friends or family, counselling is focused entirely on you.
Your counsellor can help you understand what may be contributing to the way you feel, recognise patterns in your thoughts or behaviour and explore ways of coping with difficult situations.
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling. Some people come because they’re struggling with a specific issue, while others simply want a better understanding of themselves.
What can counselling help with?
People seek counselling for many different reasons. These can include:
- Anxiety, worry and feeling overwhelmed
- Stress and burnout
- Low mood or depression
- Relationship or family difficulties
- Bereavement, grief and loss
- Low self-esteem or confidence
- Difficult life changes
- Work-related stress
- Trauma or challenging past experiences
- Feeling stuck, lost or unsure about the future
- Managing emotions
- Simply needing someone impartial to talk to
Whatever has brought you to counselling, you don’t need to have everything figured out before your first appointment.
What happens during a counselling session?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous before your first counselling session, particularly if you’ve never spoken to a therapist before.
Your initial appointment is an opportunity for you and your counsellor to talk about what has brought you to therapy and what you would like support with.
There is no expectation for you to tell your entire story in your first session.
Counselling moves at a pace that feels appropriate for you. Over time, your sessions may help you understand your feelings more clearly, identify patterns and develop healthier ways of responding to difficult thoughts, emotions or situations.
Is counselling confidential?
Confidentiality is an important part of creating a safe therapeutic relationship.
Your counsellor will explain confidentiality and its professional limits at the beginning of your work together, so you understand how your information is handled and the circumstances in which information may need to be shared for safeguarding or legal reasons.
You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions before beginning therapy.
Your mental and physical wellbeing are connected
At Body & Mind Therapy Centre, our approach is built around the understanding that wellbeing isn’t divided neatly into physical and emotional health.
Stress and emotional difficulties can affect sleep, energy, pain, muscle tension and motivation. Equally, living with pain, illness, injury or a long-term condition can have a significant impact on emotional wellbeing.
That’s why we’re proud to offer counselling alongside our wider range of physical and wellbeing therapies.
Sometimes taking care of yourself means treating an injury.
Sometimes it means giving yourself an hour to talk.
And sometimes it means doing both.
When should I consider counselling?
There isn’t a particular point you need to reach before asking for help.
If something is affecting your happiness, relationships, work, confidence or ability to enjoy everyday life, talking to somebody may help.
You also don’t need to wait until things become unmanageable.
Seeking support earlier can give you the space to understand what’s happening and begin making changes before difficulties become more deeply established.
