Complementary therapy has been a way of life in Asia for thousands of years, with many therapies sitting alongside ‘mainstream’ medical treatment. For example the use of acupuncture is commonplace within hospitals in China, and massage forms an everyday part of daily health and wellbeing in countries such as India and Thailand.
In addition to the more well know bodywork treatments such as Massage and Reflexology some of Body & Mind’s therapy team have also broadened their skills to incorporate some ancient therapies from other parts of the globe. These include Traditional Thai Massage and Thai foot massage, Mongolian Koyashai Massage, Tibetian Head Massage, Indonesian Massage and Korean Hand Massage. Each treatment offers it own unique benefits and draws on ancient techniques and principles handed down over generations.
Traditional Thai Massage
Thai massage techniques are akin to yoga exercises and stretches. It differs from Western massage, not only in technique and method but also in as much that the client receives the massage on the floor, on a mat and fully clothed. Thai massage can be invigorating and energising, helping to stretch and release muscles and restore balance throughout the body.
Thai Foot Massage
Thai Foot Massage is a treatment of the lower legs and feet that involves hands on stretching and massage to work on the Sen (energy) lines, along with the use of a wooden acupressure tool to stimulate the reflex points on the feet, which correspond to the internal organs of the body. A wonderfully relaxing treatment that can improve circulation, reduce stiffness and boost lymphatic drainage in the lower limbs.
Mongolian Koyashi Massage
This massage is based on Ayurvedic principles and is a massage of the eyes and feet. The clients remains fully clothed, the massage is performed lying on a couch. Around the eyes/forehead are massaged with cool oil while the feet are kept warm then massaged with warmed oils. This is a wonderfully relaxing massage that can help to counter stress, reduce eye tension and general fatigue.
Tibetan Acupressure Head Massage
Tibetan Acupressure is performed lying on a couch using oils on the scalp, face, neck, throat, shoulders and upper arms. Specific points are stimulated by circling or applying gentle pressure and it is wonderfully calming. In traditional Tibetan medicine this massage was prescribed mainly as a treatment of stress, anxiety, unbalanced emotions and insomnia. As it stimulates circulation in the scalp it has a nourishing effect on the hair.
Korean Hand Massage
Korean Hand Massage can be an alternative to reflexology, it works on the principle that specific areas on the hands correspond to areas of your body, head, shoulders, throat and organs of your body. By massaging the hands it is also treating your body. Oil is used on the hands and forearms. This is a relaxing massage and helps to reduce stiffness and increase flexibility of the hands. It can be useful for R.S.I and is ideal for anyone who uses a computer or works with their hands.
Indonesian Massage
Complete body exfoliation is followed by oil / cream based massage, which concentrates on pressure points, deep tissue massage and energy lines of the body. You are left feeling uplifted, rebalanced and with silky smooth skin. Ideal for relaxation, dull tired skin, pre-post holidays, excellent for muscle fatigue and over worked muscles.
Shiatsu
Shiatsu is an oriental bodywork therapy using touch to promote physical health, relaxation and emotional calm. Sessions usually take place on a padded mat or futon at floor level with the client fully clothed and various holding, stretching and pressure techniques are applied to the whole body. Regular shiatsu can be effective in preventing illness as it helps to relieve muscular tension, stimulates the circulation and auto-immune system and assists the nervous system.
