Self-care is an essential ingredient for happiness and a lack of “me time” can build up resentments and have an impact on both physical and mental wellbeing. We often feel guilty for taking time out when there is so much to do, however our good health is vital and everyone needs time to recharge their batteries.
The advantages of taking a little time for oneself are numerous and can have far reaching benefits in both our personal and professional lives. A better work-life balance brings with it an enhanced sense of wellbeing which can lead to happier relationships and make us more productive. A little down time also helps to reboot the brain and spark creativity. It can also build self-esteem as you realise over time that you are important and deserve a little time to yourself.
Most of us consider ourselves to be time poor so how do you build some “me time” into your busy life and how do you make the most of it?
- Make a “date” with yourself! Schedule time in your calendar, on a regular basis, so that you – and everyone around you! – know that you are unavailable for a short time.
- Unplug yourself! In today’s constantly connected society we are contactable virtually 24/7. So switch off your phone and computer to make sure your “me time” will be undisturbed.
- Time spent meditating helps reduce stress and anxiety, induces feelings of calm and improves sleep patterns. The more you practice meditation, the more beneficial it becomes.
- Revisit a hobby that you used to enjoy – anything that nurtures you, be it music, drawing, walking, sewing – is a great use of time to yourself.
- Book a stress busting wellbeing package – maybe a combination of Indian head massage and aromatherapy to help you unwind and relax. You will feel the benefits long after the treatment ends.
Your “me time” doesn’t have to be half a day long to be effective (although if you can then wow!!). Putting aside just 30 minutes on a regular basis will make a huge difference to your emotional and physical wellbeing so go ahead – give yourself permission to spend time on yourself.
