Following a tough winter, amateur athletes and do-it-yourselfers are preparing to return to a more active lifestyle after months of being confined indoors. Increased activity can result in muscle pain and injury. To prevent and recover from significant injuries caused by poor preparation and overexertion, Massage Envy Spa recommends Sports Massage Therapy as part of a balanced, active lifestyle.

“Sports Massage Therapy improves flexibility, which can prevent muscle injuries and lessen recovery time,” says Doreen Ellinwood, LMT and Vice President of Regional Operations for Massage Envy for North and Central New Jersey and Staten Island. “This allows regular exercisers and weekend warriors a speedier return to strenuous activities.”

Even regular exercise can exacerbate pains and strains. With high-intensity interval training (H.I.I.T.) topping the list of the American College of Sports Medicine’s worldwide fitness trends for 2014, more are experiencing muscle tightness and inflammation.

What distinguishes a sports massage from other methods is its ability to target specific muscle-tendon junctions that are overused and stressed. A study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine found that a 10-minute sports massage before and after physical activity significantly reduced muscle inflammation.

Fifty-three percent of healthcare providers recommend massage therapy to their patients, according to the newest study by The American Massage Therapy Association. Ellinwood believes that with increased endorsements from the medical community, more people will request and benefit from Sports Massage Therapy.
